Important Paintings & Contemporary Art: including the Fairfield Trust Collection, Wellington
6:00PM 3 Abbey Street, Newton, Auckland
Art+Object is delighted to announce a sale total of $3 513 926 realised under the hammer at last nights auction. The two provenanced collections sold particularly well. Highlights from the Fairfield Trust Collection included Bill Hammond’s ’Song Book’ which sold for $194 960, against an estimate of $130 000 - $180 000, and Ralph Hotere’s ‘4 + 4’ which realised $243 700. Works from the collection of Chris Booth also exceeded expectations, with his much-admired ‘Mungo’ painting more than doubling its bottom estimate to sell for $109 665. The small but beautiful ‘Sketch for a Black Window’, in turn, tripled its bottom estimate, realising $82 295. Further highlights through the rest of the catalogue included strong and record prices for the work of Colin McCahon, Arnold Manaaki Wilson, Fiona Pardington, Louise Henderson, Guy Ngan, Gretchen Albrecht and more. Bill Hammond’s superb painting ‘Hokey Pokey 3’ was the top price of the evening, selling under the hammer for the bottom estimate of $500 000 ($609 250 including fees).
