Important Paintings & Contemporary Art

6:30pm 3 Abbey Street, Newton, Auckland

Art+Object now invites entries for its second major art auction of 2020 until Thursday July 23. Our first major art auction of the year, held in the immediate aftermath of the country’s Covid-19 lockdown, defied any talk of an art market sell-off or slowdown with just shy of two million dollars of art transacted, including $1 670 000 sold under the hammer. The total was easily the highest of the auction season with strong prices achieved across all tiers of the market.

The catalogue will include the collection of local Auckland art buying collective ‘Off the Hook’, who are disbanding after ten years of collecting. Focussed on contemporary New Zealand practice, the collection includes works by Max Gimblett, Fiona Pardington, Richard Lewer, Sara Hughes, Paul Dibble, Judy Millar and more. The main body of the catalogue includes excellent and well-provenanced examples by Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Gretchen Albrecht, Pat Hanly, Stephen Bambury and Richard Killeen. Also included in the auction is Theo Schoon’s One Man’s Picture is Another Man’s Rorschach Test (1965), which featured in the artist’s seminal New Vision Gallery exhibition of 1965 and in the recent City Gallery and Te Uru exhibition, ‘Split Level View Finder: Theo Schoon and New Zealand Art’.
