Art+Object is delighted to report a current sale total of $4 410 378, achieved under the hammer last night and including current post-sale negotiated prices. New record prices were set for the work of Don Binney, Kushana Bush, David McCracken, and Dale Frank. Further excellent prices were achieved for the work of Colin McCahon, Fiona Pardington, Milan Mrkusich, Paul Dibble, Bill Hammond, Ralph Hotere, Michael Parekōwhai, Peter Siddell, and Susan Te Kahurangi King.
The much-admired painting by Don Binney became the highest-selling painting of the calendar year, a record for his work at auction, and the final sale price of $1 110 440 (against a pre-sale estimate of $550 000 - $850 000) sees him entering the realm of artist’s whose work has realised seven figures at auction. He joins the following select list of artists: Michael Parekōwhai, Colin McCahon, and Charles Goldie whose work has sold for more than a million dollars at auction in this country.
