Important Photographs, Paintings and Contemporary Art

ART+OBJECT's mid-year Winter art auction was very successful with a solid sell-through rate of around 65% achieved. One of the highlights of the sale was the collection of New Zealand art from legendary Australian collector Peter Fay which was very well received and witnessed strong prices for works by Bill Culbert, Giovanni Intra, John Johns, Gavin Hipkins, Ava Seymour, Peter Peryer and Saskia Leek. Excellent prices were achieved in the Stellar Group Collection for works by Michael Parekowhai, Karl Maughan, Paul Dibble, Elizabeth Thomson and Judy Millar. The New Zealand photography market continues to build momentum and rare prints in the catalogue by Frank Hofmann, Jae Hoon Lee, Richard Orjis, Peter Peryer and Glenn Busch all performed well. A record price was easily set for the work of Anne Noble when her boxed portfolio, In The Presence of Angels realized $18 760. In the main body of the catalogue works by Colin McCahon continued to perform exceedingly well with his beautiful charcoal Kauri drawing, which came from the collection of the artist Janet E. Paul, making $58 625 and Necessary Protection bringing a healthy $64 485. Overall the sale highlighted the continued depth of the New Zealand market. A very healthy crowd of around 150 collectors attended and combined to create a great atmosphere in the saleroom.
