Our first Rare Book auction of the year will be held as a timed online auction, commencing on Tuesday 8th March and closing on March 15th from 12 midday. In this sale, we are privileged to be offering two significant book collections.
From the library of the Wilson Family’s historic home ‘Lethenty’ at Bulls, a diverse collection of books which feature several rare items including Major Robert Wilson D.S.O. copy of ‘New Zealand Deer Heads’; a large collection of natural history titles including Sir Walter Lawry Buller’s ‘A History of the Birds of New Zealand’ and the 1905 Supplements; military histories; illustrated children’s books by Walter Crane and Arthur Rackham and Kate Greenaway; association copies of William Colenso titles.
We are also offering the Māori component of the library of Richard Nunns (1945–2021). Nunns was best known as an authority on, and expert player of, taonga pūoro, traditional Māori musical instruments. The catalogue includes his large collection of books which reflect his interest in Māori music, history, language and ethnology.
Of special interest is a collection of photographs of Māori portraits by Arthur James Iles. The catalogue also features the second edition of the 1835 ‘Declaration of the
Independence of New Zealand’ signed by Māori chiefs. Paihia (1837); First edition of Oscar Wild’s ‘The Happy Prince; Captain James Cook, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean London: W & A Strahan (1784), 3 volumes and the folio atlas; Auction plan of residential titles for the Town of Orakei, Auckland (1928).
A late consignment is the very rare autobiography by Frederick Hunt – Twenty-five years’ Experience in New Zealand and The Chatham Islands. Wellington (1866).
The auction will be held as a timed online auction. Bidding opens on Tuesday 8th March and will begin closing with lot 1 at 12pm (noon) on Tuesday 15th March. Thereafter lots will close consecutively every 30seconds until completion. If a lot receives a bid within the last two minutes, it will auto extend for two minutes until bidding stops.
